Bad news, we are still third seeds. Uefa have changed how they calculate the ranking coefficient. They now include matches played in the finals of the World Cup and European Championships. :-(

Here is the list of seedings, arranged into their respective pots. The qualifying competition will comprise six groups of six teams (groups A-F) and three groups of five teams (groups G-I). Sides in each group will play one another on a home and away basis, with qualifying matches scheduled according to the international match calendar between September 2010 and November 2011. The nine winners and the best runner-up qualify directly for the final tournament. The eight remaining runners-up contest play-off matches.. Note for Pot 3 Poland and Ukraine are not included in the qualifying as they qualify automatically as joint hosts. And by the way, the draw doesnt take place until February 7th 2010 in Warsaw. Meanwhile the draw for the finals of the World Cup in South Africa in the summer takes place next Friday.

UEFA are to consider bids from Italy, France, Turkey and a joint bid from Norway/Sweden to host the European championships in 2016. As far as I can see Turkey have to be considered outsiders. I dont know anything about the state of the stadia in Turkey. I assume that the likes of Galatasary and Fenerbache have decent stadia as they have hosted Champions League matches, and sure Istanbul has hosted the Champions League final (Go on the ‘Pool. Won it 5 times, beat that Man Utd) in the Ataturk stadium, which has a capacity of over 80,000.

Also, I think Uefa will also rule out the joint bid from Norway/Sweden as this gives up an additional finals place to the second host nation, and after the debacle with Poland/Ukraine I would hazard a gues that they are not looking favourably on future joint bids.

So that just leaves Italy and France, and with a Frenchman as the President of UEFA, your guess is as good as mine as to where the finals will go in 2016!

Chelsea v Juventus
Villarreal v Panathinaikos
Sporting Lisbon v Bayern Munich
Atletico Madrid v Porto
Lyon v Barcelona
Real Madrid v Liverpool
Arsenal v Roma
Inter Milan v Manchester United

Matches to be played 24/25 February and the return leg on the 10/11 March.

Poland could host Euro 2012 alone if construction problems persist in Ukraine, according to UEFA president Michel Platini.

In an interview with the Daily Dziennik in Poland, Platini sought to dampen speculation that the tournament could be moved to Germany, but revealed continuing concerns over the pace of work on the Kiev Stadium.

Asked about Germany, Platini responded: 'Only if the bulldozers are still working at the National Stadium in Warsaw in June 2012, but I doubt that.'

'Kiev is another matter,' he continued. 'If there are late with the stadium, then there is a possibility that Euro 2012 will be hosted only by Poland.'

The 2012 tournament has been dogged by speculation that work is not progressing quickly enough on preparing facilities, mainly in Ukraine.

In October, newly-elected Polish football federation boss Grzegorz Lato claimed that Poland would look to co-host the tournament with Germany if Ukraine failed to meet its deadlines.

That sparked an angry reaction in Ukraine, and relations were only repaired this week as Poland's Minister of Sports and Tourism, Miroslaw Drzewiecki, publicly backed Ukraine's preparations while on an official trip to the country.

'The Olympic Stadium in Kiev is being built,' said Drzewiecki. 'Despite the very difficult conditions, we saw a lot of people doing construction work and lots of work going on throughout the city.

'This mutual understanding (between Poland and Ukraine) is good for us.'
