I just received a pre-season special offer from Setanta Sports in the post today, August 14th. Basically Setanta were offering the first 3 months for only €9.99.

Note the use of the past tense! This special offer expired on Thursday 13th of August, 1 day before I received the offer in the first place. Doesn’t give you much time to think it over.

Aspiring entrepreneurs will be rushing to update their CVs and dust off their power suits, with the news that hit series ‘The Apprentice’ is once again looking for willing victims.

“The second series takes place in a different world, an Ireland where the Celtic Tiger has gone and left us with an economy in serious difficulties,” said Bill Cullen, speaking at the launch yesterday.

The Dubliner, famed for his aggressive boardroom style, said the Government should take a leaf out of his book to help speed up recovery. “Fianna Fail is very unpopular at the moment, and they’re probably well aware they won’t be re-elected. “So if I was them, I would use this chance to make some hard decisions and take some tough action in the public sector — people won’t thank them for it, but they have nothing to lose now,” said Mr Cullen. He stressed that a positive attitude is crucial.

The second series of ‘The Apprentice’ will air in the autumn and those interested have until May 8 to lodge an application.

The group which last year won a contract to provide digital terrestrial television DTT services in Ireland has pulled out of the project. The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland said Boxer – which includes Denis O’Brien’s Communicorp and BT – had withdrawn its applications for the three multiplex contracts.

Boxer blamed the economic downturn and ‘challenges’ in reaching a deal on transmission facilities with RTE Networks for its decision. The BCI said it would now ask the second place applicant in last year’s competition – One Vision – whether it was interested in negotiating on the contracts. One Vision includes TV3, Setanta and Eircom.

BCI chairperson Conor Maguire said the commission was ‘disappointed’ but was committed to pursuing its digital policy objectives. Under legislation, the BCI was to licence commercial DTT for three multiplexes – or bundles of channels – while RTÉ was assigned a single DTT multiplex to ensure the continued availability of the four existing free-to-air services in Ireland – RTÉ 1, RTÉ 2, TG4 and TV3.

RTÉ is to set up and run this DTT multiplex independently of BCI-licensed multiplexes in fulfilment of its public-service obligations.
