Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) has ruled out introducing commercial digital terrestrial television (DTT) until after analogue television services are switched off at the end of 2012. The BAI said it would review possible dates for the launch of commercial DTT at the end of 2011, at which point it might seek fresh expressions of interest. A competition could be held in 2012 with a view to commercial DTT coming on stream in 2013, it said.

In a statement, the BAI also indicated that it intends to ask the Department of Communications to give it the power to mediate between future commercial DTT operators and RTE NL, which controls the transmission network.

Aspiring entrepreneurs will be rushing to update their CVs and dust off their power suits, with the news that hit series ‘The Apprentice’ is once again looking for willing victims.

“The second series takes place in a different world, an Ireland where the Celtic Tiger has gone and left us with an economy in serious difficulties,” said Bill Cullen, speaking at the launch yesterday.

The Dubliner, famed for his aggressive boardroom style, said the Government should take a leaf out of his book to help speed up recovery. “Fianna Fail is very unpopular at the moment, and they’re probably well aware they won’t be re-elected. “So if I was them, I would use this chance to make some hard decisions and take some tough action in the public sector — people won’t thank them for it, but they have nothing to lose now,” said Mr Cullen. He stressed that a positive attitude is crucial.

The second series of ‘The Apprentice’ will air in the autumn and those interested have until May 8 to lodge an application.
