Eircom ISP attacked

The Irish Times says that many of Eircom’s internet subscribers have been left offline or experienced delays in web browsing at times this week because of a suspected attack by hackers. Some customers who tried to connect to sites such as RTE, Facebook or Bebo were redirected to incorrect websites, often displaying images of advertising or scantily clad women. Eircom blamed the problems on “an unusual and irregular volume of internet traffic” directed at its website, which affected the systems and servers that provide access to the internet for its customers.

Although unable to say what the cause of the problem was, an Eircom spokesman said the company believed it had now rectified matters. Its not much of an apology eircom. I was trying to book flights on ryanair.com for the past few days and now the prices have gone up by 40 quid

Is it any wonder that broadband penetration and line speed are so poor in Ireland, eircom cant even keep their own website up and running:

Blackout Ireland

What is Blackout Ireland?

IRMA, the Irish Recorded Music Association, wants to block Irish Internet users’ access to certain websites. They have written letters to Irish Internet providers telling them, under threat of legal action, to allow IRMA to tell them what websites to block. Eircom has already agreed to this. They will settle every application for website blocking out of court.

No sites have been blocked yet. We have limited time to act before the bans are set.

IRMA believes that by blocking websites like thepiratebay.org it will reduce piracy in Ireland and preserve some of its profits. They think the best way to achieve this is by censoring access to the internet. More details available at BlackoutIreland.com.
