I got this in an email today:

A driver is stuck in a major traffic jam just outside Dublin on the M50 motorway.
Nothing is moving.
Suddenly a Garda knocks on the window.

The driver rolls down his window and asks, “What’s going on?”

“Pensioners have kidnapped Brian Cowen, Brian Lenihan & Mary Harney, and a bunch of Bankers.
They’re asking for a €30 million ransom, otherwise they’re going to douse them with petrol and set them on fire.
We’re going from car to car taking up a collection.”

The driver asks, “How much is everyone giving, on average?”

“About a gallon.”

Last week, The San Francisco Chronicle began a “Free Sarah Palin” campaign on its Politics blog, documenting the continuing lack of access to the candidate. The effort was echoed by CNN host Campbell Brown, who called on “the McCain campaign to stop treating Sarah Palin like she is a delicate flower that will wilt at any moment.”

“This woman is from Alaska, for crying out loud. She is strong. She is tough. She is confident. And you claim she is ready to be one heartbeat away from the presidency. If that is the case, then end this chauvinistic treatment of her now. Allow her to show her stuff,” Brown said. “Free Sarah Palin.”

A one euro coin has turned up in Spain bearing the face of cartoon couch potato Homer Simpson instead of that of the country’s king. Spanish sweet-shop owner Jose Martinez was counting the cash in his till in the city of Aviles when he came across the coin where Homer’s bald head, big eyes and big nose had replaced the serious features of King Juan Carlos.

‘The coin must have been done by a professional, the work is impressive,’ he said. So far, no other coins of the hapless, beer-swilling oaf have been found in circulation.

Has anyone else found a Homer Simpson euro coin?

Just read on LidlTreats.com that they are going to try and beat the recession by living on €50 a week for all their food shopping, in Lidl

Here’s the scenario: your personal recession is REALLY biting, you are broke, broke, broke, the kitchen shelves are looking bare and it’s a whole 7 days till the next paycheck lands.

After allowing for absolute essentials like petrol or fares, rent or mortgage and a couple of drinks on Friday night, you have just €50 and some small change left. Between two of you.

So, can you feed two people for a week for around €50? And I mean feed two people well - not on cheapo pizza and stodge.

The Irish Times has stopped charging people for reading its content online, and launched a new irishtimes.com website. The redesigned irishtimes.com aims to reflect the changing demands of online readers. The simplified and improved structure of the site is intended to keep pace with internet-user demand by helping readers find what they want quickly.

The new site is planned to bring readers easily from one story to another on related topics, or related websites, and it will develop many multimedia features. The restoration of The Irish Times title online is designed to make the newspaper the dominant media website in Ireland in the 21st century. The change from a subscription model to a free newspaper on irishtimes.com is a further instalment in the biggest editorial development programme in the history of the newspaper, embarked upon last February with the redesign and modernisation of The Irish Times and the launch of new supplements.
