Liverpool 2 – Blackburn 1 (Premier League, February 28, 2009)

Liverpool broke the deadlock with Blackburn after 19 minutes, Gerrard spread the play to Yossi Benayoun out wide left and, after the Israeli had maneuvered into the box, Steven Gerrard was back on the scene to slip in the opener. A cheeky handball from Jamie Carragher while grounded in the Reds’ box was seen by the officials, allowing Keith Andrews to bring Rovers level from the spot. But then Anfield saw the sight they’ve been missing for much of the season as Fernando Torres was able to restored Liverpool’s lead from a neat Maxi pass.

Here are the highlights of Saturdays game:

Relief broke out at Anfield 10 minutes from the break as Liverpool took the lead against Bolton when Dirk Kuyt slid home after Insua crossed from the left and Aquilani did well to head the ball back across goal for the Dutchman. The Merseysiders made sure of the points midway through the second half when an Insua shot took a wicked deflection off Kevin Davies for 2-nil.

We are in the midst of the F1 2010 launch season with a number of the major teams having already launched their new cars for the upcoming 2010 season which kicks off in Bahrain on March 14th. Also the first of the official winter testing sessions has already gotten underway at Valencia this morning. Read more on the test session here

The NFL have announced the opponents each team will face in the 2010 season which is due to start on Thursday September 9th at the home of this years Superbowl winners. The season will culminate with Super Bowl XLV, which is scheduled to be played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Sunday February 6th, 2011.

For the 2010 season, the intra-conference and inter-conference matchups are:

• AFC West vs. AFC South
• NFC East vs. NFC North

Here is the draw for the first knock-out round of this season’s Champions League:

First legs to be played on 16/17 and 23/24 February with the second legs scheduled for 9/10 and 16/17 March.

The Central Council of the GAA voted this weekend to introduce a spate of experimental rules to the game. Depending on their success they will then be voted on at Annual Congress 2010 in County Down.

• When a player is in possession of the ball it may be struck with an open hand or a fist provided there is a definitive striking action (the current rule just allows for striking with the fist).
• Introduction of a free kick (or mark) for catching a kick-out between the two 45 metre lines. Free kick must be taken by the player who catches the ball.
• The rule governing the bounce is redefined – there will be no foul unless the ball is caught. That appears to suggest that a player may bounce the ball more than once as long as the ball is not caught.
• The square ball rule is to be altered greatly. An attacking player can now enter the small rectangle before the ball. There are three exceptions: a player cannot be in the square before the ball if from a sideline kick, a free-kick or a 45.
• Statistics show that fewer penalties are being scored. Therefore it is proposed that the penalty kick be moved forward from the 13 metre line to 11 metres from goal.
• To speed up play it is proposed that all kick-outs be taken from the 13 metre line.
• To provide more clarity to the advantage rule, referees shall use clearly defined signals to indicate that the foul has been seen and is playing advantage.
• It was thought that players are getting charged while picking up the ball. To refine the rule and add protection, instead of a fair charge definition using the words ’side to side’, the rule should refer to a ’shoulder to shoulder’ charge.
• Topical in view of the controversy during the Cork and Tyrone match and borrowing a rule from rugby, it is suggested that after the full time whistle comes after the expiration of added time when the ball next crosses any boundary line.
