ArchLinux on the Pi

I have now tried Arch Linux on the Raspberry Pi and now I understand why RaspberryPi.org said that they didn’t recommend this distribution for beginners. I was expecting a nice shiny windowed GUI, but all I got was, as my wife calls it “a black screen yolky”. Just a command prompt.

Well first was a login prompt, so I had to go back to the downloads page to find the root username and passwd. After logging in I tried using the startx command, but this didnt work as startx could not be found. I tried apt-get but that didnt work either. In Arch Linux its pacman instead. Which I think is more intuitive than apt-get.

I googled but couldnt find the commands needed to download and install a GUI. So now I see why it isnt recommended for beginners.

SD card removed and wiped and will try again with some other distro, any recommendations?
