Advanced discussions about the introduction of an All Ireland soccer league have taken place between clubs from both sides of the border and interested stakeholders, with the intention of drafting a New Year proposal that will be too good for the FAI and IFA to refuse.
The Irish Independent has learned that top eircom League sides have been involved in secret talks with counterparts in the North and with the backing of significant third party encouragement in the hope of bringing the project to fruition.
They have been given reason to believe that governments in the North and South would be receptive to the project and are confident that UEFA — who have been informally sounded out — and FIFA will give the necessary backing to the venture.

The popularity of Nintendo’s Wii console has boosted sales at Game Group, but the company fears it will not be able to satisfy demand this Christmas.
Game announced this morning that its like-for-like sales are up by nearly 50% this year, a performance which one analyst firm described as “stunning”.

The Wii’s motion-sensitive gameplay, which lets users play virtual sports in their living room, has been an unexpected hit. Nintendo has struggled to supply enough Wii units since the product launched just over a year ago in Japan, and Game revealed today that this is still a problem.
“We anticipate that demand will outstrip supply [over Christmas] particularly for the Nintendo Wii format,” warned chairman Peter Lewis.

Setanta has accused Sky of effectively preventing it from launching a high definition service on digital satellite, it was revealed by Ofcom today.
The allegation was made in a submission to the media regulator in July, when BT, Setanta, Top Up TV and Virgin Media called for a market investigation into Britain’s pay television industry.

When Setanta starts broadcasting live FA Premier League matches in the UK from August this year, it would like to provide viewers with the option of watching that coverage in HD.”
It said that Setanta HD would need access to the satellite platform to be viable because “the satellite platform is by far the biggest pay TV platform in the UK.”
