Lewis Hamilton squares up to resident Top Gear driver The Stig
Formula One star Lewis Hamilton is to swap his multi-million pound, 230mph McLaren to drive a modest family car for BBC Twos Top Gear show on Sunday.
Hamilton takes part in the programmes “star in a reasonably priced car” feature, where celebrities compete to post the fastest lap around a track.
The 22-year-old Briton is out to beat a time of one minute 44.4 seconds, set by Top Gears resident driver The Stig.
Hamiltons time will be revealed during the programme which starts at 2000 GMT.
Former Formula One stars Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill and Mark Webber have already taken the challenge.
The select group of former drivers is pitted in a separate category to stars such as Hugh Grant, Simon Cowell, Ellen MacArthur and Gordon Ramsay who have all taken the challenge in the past.
The appearance will be the first on the show since Hamilton narrowly failed to win the world championship in his rookie season, losing out to Ferraris Kimi Raikkonen by one point.

I am amazed that there is a difference of 15 quid just by walking across the main corridor in Manor West shopping centre!
Such a difference between GAA in Wicklow and Kerry. There was quite a big crowd at the final on Saturday in Fitzgerald Stadium, between Dr. Crokes of Killarney and Rathmore, a game easily won by the Killarney men. But its obvoious that the GAA in Kerry know how to organise their sport. In Wicklow for some strange reason, they play their matches in Aughrim. I mean where the hell is that. I have lived in Wicklow for 20 years and I dont know where it is. I think I have seen it signposted on the Arklow by-pass. But ask any kid in Bray where Wanderers play their home matches and they will point you in the direction of the Carlisle Grounds. In fact most of them will no doubt have been there at some stage in their life.
Bray has a population of 30,000 people, Killarney around 9,000. But how come Killarney has a much bigger GAA following? And I’m not just talking about the usual Kerry crowd who “wait for the All-Ireland”. I am talking about club matches in Kerry, that attract what must be massive crowds by the standards of any other county.
The Wicklow county board have made a step in the right direction, by appointing Mick O’Dwyer as manager of the senior team. But even then its a Kerryman they appoint. And it just shows you that given the right circumstances that there is a significant interest in GAA in Wicklow. See this and also the fact that 400 people turned up for the first Wicklow training session under the stewardship of Micko. Lets hope they keep this forward thinking up, and maybe in the future they will see sense and play matches in Bray, or one of the towns in Wicklow (no offense, Aughrim).
A plan for the development of tourism in Kerry and the south west region over the next two years is to be launched this afternoon. The Regional Tourism Development Strategic Plan 2008 - 2010 is to be launched by Fáilte Ireland South West. Fáilte Irelands role is to support and help the tourism industry to meet the challenges, and to sustain and increase the level of activity in the sector.
Questions are being asked why there is no Cystic Fibrosis nurse in Kerry at present, by parents of children suffering from the disease. John Healy from Killorglin whose daughter has Cystic Fibrosis claims that a nurse went on maternity leave in August and last he heard a replacement was found but left the job after just two days. Mr Healy says a CF nurse is vital to help sufferers and their families and at present people frustrated. He fears Kerry could lose the service completely:
Killarney National Park is to be listed as an area of sensitivity by the Irish Aviation Authority. The listing means that aircraft operators including helicopters, are requested to avoid the site where possible. Low flying aircraft are particularly targetted because of noise and other environmental reasons. The National Park will not become a no fly zone, but will be listed alongside the prohibited zones in the Internationally recognised pilots handbook.
